In his Palm Sunday “Moments” column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Fr. Jerry M. Orbos, SVD, wrote “Of donkeys and monkeys.”

The article reminds me of the Filipino people who, like the donkey, not in its sense of stupidity, are patient but stubborn. For donkey’s years, we have done all the donkeywork while all the government does is talk the hind legs off a donkey.

Indeed, we are a domestic beast of burden, and there’s a monkey on our back that throws a monkey wrench into the governing process and does monkey business alongside a barrel of monkeys in a “monkey-see, monkey-do” congress.

Okay, we may be a domesticated ass kind of people, but let’s not make a monkey of our leaders. Why should we take all the credit?

Army Chief Lt. Gen. Hermogenes Esperon said "Oplan Hackle," an alleged destabilization plan, was discovered in December 2005 with the seizure of a document entitled "The Last Revolution."

‘Hackle’ means “to chop roughly” or “mangle by hacking.” The idiom “get (one’s) hackles up” means to be extremely insulted or irritated.

If we are to believe the government, behind the “Oplan Hackle” which it claims to be a plot to embarrass and even kidnap, or kill, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, is a fiend named Gregorio Honasan, a former senator.

A fiend is a person motivated by irrational enthusiasm (as for a cause). I don’t know if he fits the description, but Honasan always finds himself the usual suspect in destabilization plots.

Although groups calling themselves YOUNG (not to be confused with YOUng) and RAFP claimed responsibility for the blasts that rocked Malacañang, the government is still pointing the finger at Honasan.

As the Inquirer editorial puts it: “A dangerous game is under way, and…no one can say with certainty whether this isn't all a plot hatched by a government eager to provide the pretext for a state of emergency.”

Let me just say GMA shouldn’t be afraid of Gringo dropping bombs. She should be afraid of the Gringos dropping her like a hot potato.

Here’s a would-be sequel as reported by inq7.net: “Reliving her days in the academe, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo played teacher to grade 1 pupils of an elementary school in Metro Manila on Tuesday, speaking to them in English, teaching geography, and pledging textbook assistance.”

Thousands of people stampeded into the Philsports Arena in Pasig at dawn to secure limited seats hours ahead of the live broadcast of a popular noontime television variety show called "Wowowee" on ABS-CBN.

The show offered a top prize of one million pesos, a house and lot, and a car for its first anniversary celebration Saturday.

Party-list group Sanlakas said the stampede that killed more than 70 people reflects "the real state of Philippine economy."

"It is a tragic picture of national desperation where many Filipinos are hooked to a television game show, pinning their hopes on partaking of the cash prizes to ease their extreme poverty. It's not 51 pesos to a dollar. It's 70 lives to the peso," Sanlakas president Wilson Fortaleza said.

Camilo Sabio, chair of the Presidential Commission on Good Government, refused to answer questions posed by senators on whether or not Malacañang had approved negotiations on a compromise on the coco levy.

As a result, the Senate gave the PCGG a P1 budget for 2006.

Sen. Joker Arroyo said Sabio should resign his positions as chair or officer in charge of 29 government-sequestered corporations since these posts were in conflict with his job at PCGG.

“As PCGG chair, he is pursuing these sequestered corporations for ill-gotten monies. Yet, he chairs the same sequestered corporations that he is going after,” Arroyo said.

Obviously, the PCGG’s emphasis is on “Presidential Commission” rather than on “Good Government.”

Last night, Manny Pacquiao skillfully showed his rapid-fire boxing style and proved two things: that he is the best in his class and that he is a class all by himself. After all, he’s the first boxer to knock out two Mexican boxing legends and future Hall of Famers -- Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales.

For once, the entire Philippines was a nation in jubilation as Pacquiao stopped Morales in the 10th round of their scheduled 12-rounder. But the celebration soured as soon as First Gentleman Mike Arroyo unabashedly climbed the ring for a photo opportunity, thereby spoiling Pacman’s victory.

Clearly, Erik Morales lost his title – and I mean the title “El Terrible” – to Mike Arroyo. It’s not enough to have a hard chin; you must have a thick face.

Mike Arroyo shouldn’t have showed up at the showdown. For all we know, he only needs his glasses to make a spectacle of himself. Terrible.
